My wife and I had an opportunity to try Nonna Picci’s pizza last night, two days before the grand opening on August 9, 2017. I haven’t had a wood fired oven pizza in over 20 years, and that was back in Atlanta dining at Rocky’s Brick Oven pizza (now closed). Nonna Picci's is a tasty, welcome surprise to the Statesboro dining scene. The pizza has a wonderful light, crispy crust. The toppings aren't overly heavy on the pie, and the ingredients are as fresh as you can get.

We first dined on the Margherita pizza, it is a signature Italian pizza combination of red sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil. It disappeared quickly from our table and into our tummies, we then gave the Nonna Veggie pie a taste. For both, we both proclaim WOW!

In only takes 3 minutes from the time that the kitchen staff, coordinated by chef Jordan Tejeda, put the toppings on the dough and pop it into the oven till the pizza is ready to eat. By the way, the oven cooks at over 700 degrees Fahrenheit.

There is a huge difference between regular oven baked and wood fire baked pizza. Once you taste it, you will completely understand. I imagine once you have given Nonna Picci's pizza a try you will have a new favorite place to dine (or takeout).

The kitchen area is open for patrons to view the pizza pie making process, and provides a bit of entertainment while waiting a few short minutes for your pizza to bake. It is really fun watching them assemble the pizza and bake it.

The prices at Nonna Picci's won't break your dining budget either. You can order a 9 inch pizza and a beverage for around ten dollars. They currently have eight pizzas and a build-your-own pizza on the menu along with salads and desserts. The pizza comes in a 9-inch and a 14-inch diameter. The fourteen inch is about 2 1/2 times larger than the nine inch version.

My wife, and the friends we met at Nonna Picci’s, all agree that the pizza is absolutely miles ahead of anything in Statesboro. It’s almost hard to believe that you can get such an outstanding quality pizza for the low prices they charge. It is true, and for that, we are grateful (and full).

There are more plans to expand the restaurant, after the grand opening. We will leave you in suspense on that for now.

I would like to take a quick moment to thank Kelsey Ramos, Jeff Humes and the staff of Nonna Picci's, for the opportunity to have a taste of their hard work before they officially open this Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 4 p.m. We suggest you come running and get your pie the moment the door opens. You'll be glad you did!
